Fresh Cut Flower Styling Tips
You’ve traveled to your local Edmonton florist and gone through all the trouble of selecting gorgeous flowers…but what to do next? Many people just fill a vase with water, stick the flowers in and presto, a bouquet is on the table. If the bouquet has already been carefully crafted this will be fine, but wouldn’t it be more satisfying to take a few minutes and make everyone think you’re a professional? Here’s what you need to do to add style and panache to that store bought bouquet:
1) Using a fresh vase, take your greenery (i.e., ferns, leaf branches, etc), trim the ends to desired length and criss-cross the stems so they line the inside of the vase. Why? To give yourself a base and to make placing and arranging your flowers easier.
2) For small, lower seated bouquets, gently slide and criss-cross floral stems around the inner lining of the vase. This places flowers in an outside ring on the vase with only stems showing in the centre; the greater the amount of stems, the steadier your flowers will remain. Each row of flowers will stand taller than the previous, giving you an elegant and full-bodied arrangement.
3) For taller bouquets, use slender, tall vases; this way the flowers will stand better and be less prone to bending stems or breakage. Some ideal flowers to consider for your tall bouquet are long stemmed roses, lilies, sunflowers, freesias, gladiolas, snapdragons and blue delphinium. You may even find taller tulips or consider zinnias as these will add a delightful burst of color.
4) One final tip to remember is not to make the flowers sit too evenly in the vase as this detracts from their own natural beauty. Any garden, no matter how professional, has blooms in varying heights and some which are even hiding…yet each flower makes its mark upon the design. When in doubt, follow Mother Nature’s lead; after all, she was the original florist!
